I am so excited to be back at Willett following the April vacation! I hope everyone was able to take some time to relax, have fun, and enjoy the spring weather that seems to have finally arrived!
Today was a great day at school. The Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation sponsored a visit to Willett by Ray, from Bwana Igwana, who came to teach the children about reptiles. This was an exciting presentation which included live reptiles. Some brave Willett Students even touched a reptile or two! The children can tell you that I was a bit nervous about one kind of reptile in particular! There are photos of some of our visitors below.
Tomorrow is "Wear green day" at Willett. Everyone is encouraged to wear green to support the Boston Celtics Basketball team as the compete in the NBA playoffs. Go Celtics!
On Thursday, April 28th, as part of Willett's Community Day, the first graders are planning to do some planting around Willett, to help give back to our neighborhood. This event will be weather permitting. Please be sure your child comes to school that day wearing clothes suitable for gardening. We will be outside most likely in the afternoon. It would be fantastic if we could have a couple of parents come to help out. Please remember, any volunteers do need to have a current CORI on file in our school office. If you would be interested in helping on Thursday, please email me for further details.
This week's Reading Street story is The Dot. Children have already discussed the artist with Mrs. Nicoloro and have some great background knowledge to share. Our spelling words are long e words spelled with ea. We are also learning to use adjectives for color and shape in our writing and discussions.
We are beginning Everyday Math unit 8 this week. It is hard to believe we are this far into the school year! This unit focuses on Geometry. We will be learning to discuss shapes based on their attributes. We will be working on naming shares of a whole using halves, and fourths. During this unit we will continue to learn about time. We will learn to tell time to the half hour.
