Our first grade class welcomed 5 caterpillars to our room yesterday. They were very tiny when we first looked at them. The children were amazed to see that they have already grown a lot! We are excited to observe how these caterpillars change over time. Our Reading Street selection for next week is I'm a Caterpillar! We will be learning all about the life cycle of these amazing creatures. We will also be keeping a caterpillar diary as part of our writing experiences.
In math we have been learning so much! We've been working on telling time to the hour, using doubles "helper facts" to figure out answers to addition problems, and we will be practicing our measuring skills by measuring our caterpillars as they grow. These are all skills your child should work on at home too.
The weather is getting warmer, as Punxatawny Phil, the groundhog, predicted. We do seem to be having an early spring. I know I am thoroughly enjoying this weather. Please remember to send a light jacket or sweatshirt to school, even on days when the weather is predicted to reach "highs into the 60s and 70s". Often those highs are not reached until well into the afternoon. Since we have recess in the morning, we often still need a jacket. There was a cool breeze at recess today. I was glad I had my sweatshirt.
Please remember that every Wednesday is our library day. I had 6 very sad first graders during library this week. They did not return their books so could not borrow a new one.
Don't forget to change your clocks ahead this weekend! Sunday, March 13th is the start of Daylight Savings Time. This is my favorite time of year, when we get to enjoy more daylight and time outside after school! The downside of this is that our little ones become confused and overtired by this change. Losing an hour of sleep this weekend will take many of these first graders until the end of the upcoming week to adjust.YIKES! Please remember that while we all love being outside enjoying the additional daylight, small children will adjust easiest when their routines are not greatly changed. They still need their quiet time, and ten hours of sleep each night in order to focus and do their best in school.
The results are in from our Willett PTO Read-a-thon. Mrs. Bower's first grade class raised the most money and got to choose Mr. Cateon's new hair color. They chose red, white, and blue. Mr. Cateon will sport his "new do" on March 23rd, at our next Willett Community Gathering.
Have a great weekend!
