We have completed our first unit in our Reading Street series. Throughout the unit we read, wrote, sang, and talked about pets and wild animals. We learned the differences between fiction and nonfiction. I taught the students a trick to remember which is which. We say that fiction is fake because both start with f, and nonfiction is not fake, because both include the letters n and f.
The next couple of weeks will be different from our regular Reading Street routine. We will not have a story of the week or a list of spelling words to study. Instead we will spend time next week developing an opinion writing piece (in class). It will be based on one of the stories we read during unit 1. We will also begin a unit developed by the state of Massachusetts. It integrates literacy and science. We will be learning about wild animal habitats. This unit will also include an at-home project. Once we begin the unit we will discuss the project and information will be sent home so you can help your child with it.
This change will also impact our homework routine. We will continue to have the reading log and book of the week, however we will not have spelling pages to complete. Please use this time to review the previous spelling words, practice high frequency words, practice adding and subtracting using coins, tally marks, cereal, etc. Your children know a few math games to play at home, such as Penny Plate and Top It. You can even spend some extra time having your child practice reading aloud, or creating number stories and solving them together. It is important that while we don't have the same kinds of written homework, the children still use the time to practice the skills that we have learned during the 42 days that we have already been together in first grade.

Our students will have a half day of school on Wednesday, November 4th. This is so teachers can hold parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday afternoon. We also have conferences scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, November 4th and 5th. All students received a yellow conference letter earlier this week. If you have not returned yours, please let me know as soon as possible. so I can confirm my schedule with the school office.
One of my students left a grey and dark blue hooded sweatshirt in my closet. Sadly, nobody seems to recognize it. If your child is missing a sweatshirt, please let me know.
Have a wonderful weekend!
