This week we finished reading the stories in Reading Street unit 4, which focused on treasures. We have learned about items we treasure, memories we treasure, family, and friends who are treasures. Next week we will be writing about something we treasure and we will be explaining why it is special to us. This work will be done in class.
Since there is not a Reading Street story or spelling concept for the week, your child will be responsible only for the reading log and book of the week homework.
Next week, we will be finishing Everyday Math unit 8. We will be working on telling time to the hour, and will continue learning about the fractions one half and one fourth. We will make connections to the analog clock during these fractions lessons.
We planted seeds this week and we are learning about what plants need to grow. We have also been learning about why we need plants. We are looking forward to seeing our seeds grow. We will eventually plant our plants in the Willett Community Garden.
As the weather gets warmer, our classroom will definitely warm up. I have been encouraging the children to wear short sleeves to school, along with whatever sweatshirt or sweater you may wish for them to wear. This will allow them to be more comfortable, especially in the afternoons when temperatures heat up.
We are running low on skinny expo markers (preferably black), tissues, and disinfectant wipes. If you are able to donate some to get us to the end of the school year it would be greatly appreciated.
Next week will continue PARCC testing for the older Willett Students. This will impact the first grade schedule a bit. Our specials will be from 10:00 until 10:57, right before we go to lunch, instead of at the end of our school day. Young children rely on knowing our classroom routines so they can anticipate what will happen throughout the school day. This schedule change does get confusing for many first graders, so it would be great if you could remind them about it.
Field trip permission slips were sent home this week. Please be sure to send your child's slip back as soon as possible for planning purposes. It will be important that you let me know on that form if your child will be ordering a bagged lunch from our school cafeteria for the June 8th trip. The bagged lunch always includes a deli sandwich. We will be asking ahead of time if the children who are ordering will want a ham sandwich or a turkey sandwich. Any parent who wishes to volunteer to chaperone the trip should indicate this on the permission as well. Please remember that you will need to have up to date CORI forms on record in our school office to attend. This holds true even if you have completed CORI paperwork somewhere other than Willett Elementary School.
