Wow! I can't believe that it is Wednesday already! Having Monday off mixes many of us up- myself included. Thank you for remembering that today was Library day. Only two students did not have their books returned on time, even with it being a short week. That's great!
It has been too cold for outdoor recess, but we are making the best of it with some fun games, coloring, blocks, etc. We have been trying to squeeze in an extra movement break (GoNoodle) here or there just to give the students a chance to move around. I sure wish it were above 30 degrees so the children could run around and get some exercise outside during the school day.
I did not remember to photocopy the student "clip charts" yesterday. I remembered that it was Tuesday, but had forgotten that we weren't together on Monday, therefore the children did not already have them. I think we can "make do" without them for this week. We continue to use the clip chart in class though. I know that you and the children are in the routine of discussing it at home, so I think this is okay. I will make sure we have the charts available next week. I apologize if this has caused any confusion at home.
This week's story, Honey Bees teaches how insects live in a community, just like we do. In class, we will learn how to use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast our community to insect communities. We are also learning about using nouns in sentences. Our phonics lessons are focusing on using long e words spelled with ee, as well as using two syllable words that have a VCCV (vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel) pattern, such as the word tablet.
Please continue having your child read aloud to you each day. We have reached the point in first grade when we begin working on reading fluency. The children are working on reading aloud with a natural "flow" to their reading. The goal is to sound less like they are reading each word individually, and more like the natural way they speak aloud.
During math we have been working on using money (pennies and dimes) to make tens. The children have been learning to use the words exchange and when talking about trading in 10 pennies for a dime. It would be great for the children to practice this at home too.
